About Kingston's History

Kingston is in Ontario, Canada. It is found at the beginning of the St. Lawrence River and at the mouth of the Cataraqui River (south end of the Rideau Canal) on the eastern end of Lake Ontario. The city is halfway between Montreal (Quebec), and Toronto, and about two hours south of the nation's capital of Ottawa. Kingston is also located near the Thousand Islands tourist region which is to the east and also the Prince Edward County tourist area over to the west.

Kingston the Limestone City

Kingston is nicknamed the "Limestone City" because of the numerous heritage buildings built with local limestone. Originally a French trading post and military fort called Fort Cataraqui, later Fort Frontenac, became a popular spot for people to settle. Since 1760, the outpost was under British possession. the site was renamed Kingston after the British took possession of the fort, and Loyalists began settling the region in the 1780s.

Kingston was the first Capital of Canada

From 1841 to 1844 Kingston was the capital of the United Province of Canada - the first capital city for our great country! And the hometown of the first Prime Minister, John A. Macdonald, as well. Since that time the city has grown into a regional centre of health care, and learning, being the home to three major hospitals, two big universities, and a large vocational college.
